The Chocolate Chip Cookie Showdown: BJs vs. Costco
Some battles are best decided bite by bite.
Today I’m pitting two warehouse cookies against each other.
In one corner is Costco’s chocolate chunk cookie. In the other corner is B Js chocolate chip cookie. I’ve tried both, so let’s get started with this cookie showdown to see which warehouse store does it better.
To be fair, Costco debuted its over-sized double chocolate chunk cookie first. Sold at its concession stand for $2.50 (per single cookie), this cookie weighs in at 6-7 ounces. At first bite, I was impressed. I mean, there are few things more comforting than a warm chocolate chip cookie. It has crispy edges and a soft center with a generous amount of chocolate chunks. The gooeyness makes the chocolate chunks go down easier.
This cookie is meant to be eaten fresh out of the oven and it doesn’t disappoint. But it’s a lot to eat in one sitting, even for a chocolate chip cookie addict like me. But if you choose to save it for later at home, it loses some of its appeal. Even reheating it doesn't bring back the sensory experience or the joy of a warm, fresh baked chocolate chip cookie.
A few months after I discovered Costco’s chocolate chunk cookie, I happened to be at BJs when I discovered its version - the colossal chocolate chunk cookie, These come three to a box and are priced at $7.99, BJs maintains each cookie weighs in at about 3.3 ounces but a side-by-side comparison confirms that BJs cookie is bigger in size, if not ounces. These chocolate chunk cookies aren’t sold warm but don’t let that dissuade you. I didn’t even wait to get home to try one - I sampled it in the parking lot in my car. It is soft, chewy and loaded with chocolate chunks. Heavenly! I pick up a box whenever I'm at BJs and store them frozen. When defrosted, they maintain their freshness.
So, which is better? In the end, this wasn’t a knockout but a split decision. Costco’s cookie wants attention; BJs cookie wants loyalty. Costco’s version throws a heavy punch but if not consumed fresh, the experience is disappointing. BJs wins on balance and endurance, is reliable and won’t let you down.
This showdown goes this distance - two solid contenders and a rivalry worth snacking! No loser, only crumbs. Bottom line for me, the BJs cookie won me over and I’ll happily die on that crumb-covered hill.
